چکیده

Two main tasks in the field of volumetric image processing are acquisition and visualization of 3D data. The main challenge is to reduce processing costs, while maintaining high accuracy. To achieve these goals for volume rendering (visualization), we demonstrate that non-separable box splines for body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices can be adapted to fast evaluation on graphics hardware. Thus, the BCC lattice can be used for interactive volume rendering leading to better image quality than comparable methods. Leveraging this result, we study volumetric reconstruction methods based on the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. We show the equivalence of the standard implementation of the EM-based reconstruction with an implementation based on hardware-accelerated volume rendering for nearest-neighbor interpolation to achieve fast reconstruction times. Accuracy is improved by adapting the EM algorithm for the BCC lattice, leading to superior accuracy, more compact data representation, and better noise reduction compared to the Cartesian one.

Absolute Permeability Calculation by Direct Numerical Simulation in Porous Media

Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...

Efficient volume rendering on the body centered cubic lattice using box splines

We demonstrate that non-separable box splines deployed on body centered cubic lattices (BCC) are suitable for fast evaluation on present graphics hardware. Therefore, we develop the linear and quintic box splines using a piecewise polynomial (pp)-form as opposed to their currently known basis (B)-form. The pp-form lends itself to efficient evaluation methods such as de Boor’s algorithm for spli...

BCC-Splines: Generalization of B-Splines for the Body-Centered Cubic Lattice

Recently, the B-spline family of reconstruction filters has been generalized for the hexagonal lattice, which is optimal for sampling 2D circularly band-limited signals. In this paper, we extend this generalization to the body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, which is optimal for sampling spherically band-limited 3D signals. We call the obtained new reconstruction filters BCC-splines. Although the...

Spatial Relationship between Mandibular Third Molars and Inferior Alveolar Nerve using a Volume Rendering Software

Precise localization of the third molars in relation to the inferior alveolar nerve canal is critical from a clinical point of view and strongly affects the surgical treatment outcome. Recently, by using three-dimensional modeling software, the relationship of third molar root apices and inferior alveolar nerve canal can be better understood. In this study, the spatial relationship of two surgi...

High-Quality Volumetric Reconstruction on Optimal Lattices for Computed Tomography

Within the context of emission tomography, we study volumetric reconstruction methods based on the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. We show, for the first time, the equivalence of the standard implementation of the EM-based reconstruction with an implementation based on hardware-accelerated volume rendering for nearestneighbor (NN) interpolation. This equivalence suggests that higher-or...
